Malachite on the Statue of Liberty?
Believe it or not - yes, Malachite is part of the story behind the Statue of Liberty’s famous green color! While Lady Liberty is not covered in gemstone-quality Malachite like the crystals collectors admire, the natural patina that formed on her copper exterior contains Malachite along with other copper minerals.
When the Statue of Liberty was unveiled in 1886, she looked very different to what she does today. Instead of her familiar blue-green appearance, the statue was originally the color of a brand-new penny - a bright, warm reddish-brown. Her outer skin was made from thin sheets of copper that were carefully hammered into shape and attached to an iron framework. These copper sheets are surprisingly thin, measuring about 2.4 millimeters thick, or roughly the thickness of two pennies.
So how did copper transform into the beautiful green color we see today?
Over time, exposure to oxygen, rain, moisture, and the salty environment of New York Harbor caused the copper surface to undergo a natural chemical reaction called oxidation. This process slowly created a protective coating known as a patina.
The Statue of Liberty’s patina is made up of several naturally occurring copper minerals. These include Malachite, a vibrant green copper carbonate mineral loved by crystal collectors, as well as Brochantite and Antlerite, which also contribute to her unique blue-green color.
This transformation did not happen overnight. Over the course of about two decades, the copper gradually changed from its original bronze color into the iconic shade we recognize today. By the early 1900s, Lady Liberty had completed her remarkable natural transformation.
Rather than harming the statue, this patina helps protect the copper underneath by creating a barrier against further corrosion. The same mineral processes that create beautiful specimens found in nature can also create breathtaking changes in one of the world’s most famous landmarks.
